SS-31 (also known as Elamipretide or Bendavia) is a first-in-class, synthetic cell-permeable tetrapeptide designed to selectively target and protect the inner mitochondrial membrane. It belongs to the unique Szeto-Schiller (SS) peptide family. Unlike traditional antioxidants that broadly scavenge radicals throughout the cytoplasm, SS-31 is highly basic and aromatic, allowing it to rapidly cross cellular membranes and concentrate several thousand-fold within the mitochondria.
